EMS Placements

Interested in an EMS placement in our farm animal practice?

Delaware Veterinary Group has training links with the University of Bristol and is actively involved with the farm track rotation students in their final year. The practice is also an approved and outstanding training centre with the RVC. We adopt a proactive approach towards EMS and can provide vet student placements in our farm department. Students are welcome to join the large animal team and shadow our vets on routine visits, farm calls and observe operations. We have excellent facilities at the practice with our large animal hospital unit, in house laboratory and interherd bureau. Our veterinary team can offer students a wealth of experience and teaching in farm veterinary medicine and practice, and currently have two vets with a Diploma in Bovine Reproduction with a further three vets studying for this qualification.

Delaware also has links with overseas universities and are able to offer some EMS placements to students outside the UK. We have connections with Ghent University in Belgium, University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover, University of tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro in Vila Real, Portugal and the University of Cordoba in Spain.

Equipment

Students are expected to supply their own equipment for their visit to the practice:

  • Wellingtons (steel toe cap)
  • Stethoscope
  • Good quality waterproofs & clothing suitable for the weather (no jeans, trainers or vest tops)

Zoonoses

Students are at risk from Zoonoses, therefore please ensure you wear protective clothing at all times whilst treating animals. Please ensure your protective clothing is kept clean and disinfected. Do not wear your protective clothing whilst in the Practice, unless required to assist during treatment of an animal.

Bio-Security

All students are strictly required to observe and implement bio-security procedures both on farm and at the practice.

Health and Safety

Your health & safety whilst you are with Delaware Vet Group is very important to us and something we take very seriously. Please inform Sarah Poore in the office if you have any conditions or concerns that may affect your time with us, so we can be aware and prepared to cater for your needs. We will require you to read the student information we provide carefully and complete our health and safety forms to assist us in our duty of care for you during your visit.

Accommodation

The practice is unable to offer residential accommodation for students but we have local bed and breakfast availability within walking distance of the practice; they offer comfortable home from home rooms and look after our students exceptionally well. Let us know if you need somewhere to stay; we can help arrange this for you.

Please arrive at the practice for your visit to Delaware Veterinary Group promptly at 8:30am and report to Sarah Poore in the office, who will be able to organise your day for you with one of our vets. Our aim is to provide you with a warm welcome in a positive learning environment. Our friendly team of vets are able to mentor and offer support to help you reach your full potential.
